The monsoon is hard on cars. A few simple checks before the rains arrive make wet-weather driving safer and help you avoid problems later.
Check that you can see
Worn wiper blades smear water across the glass. If yours streak or judder, replace them. Check your washer fluid, and make sure all your lights work. A windshield coating can also help rain bead off the glass.
Check your grip
Tyres with little tread cannot clear water well, which increases the risk of skidding. Check the tread and pressures, and look for damage. If you are not sure, a tyre service will tell you where you stand.
Check your brakes
Brakes feel different in the wet. If yours squeal, grind or feel soft, have them looked at before the rain makes it matter more.
Keep the underbody clean
Mud trapped under the car holds moisture against metal parts. An underbody wash after a wet spell helps clear it.
Keep the cabin dry
Damp floor mats lead to musty smells. Dry them out after wet days, and check door seals and drain holes for blockages. If a smell has already set in, interior deep cleaning can help.
Drive carefully through water
Avoid driving through deep standing water, because you cannot see what is under it, and water entering the engine can cause serious damage. If your car does stall in water, do not try to restart it. Call for help instead.
