A warning light on the dashboard is your car asking for attention. The colour tells you how urgent it is. Your owner's manual explains the exact symbols for your car, so keep it handy.

Red means stop

A red light usually means a serious or safety-related problem. Stop somewhere safe as soon as you can, and do not keep driving until you know what is wrong. Lights that need urgent attention include:

Amber means check soon

An amber light usually means something needs looking at, but you can often drive carefully to a workshop. Common examples are the check engine light, tyre pressure warning and ABS warning.

A flashing check engine light is more serious than a steady one, so reduce your speed and get it checked right away.

Battery light

A battery light while driving often points to a charging problem rather than the battery itself. The car may run for a while and then lose power, so have it checked soon. Our battery service tests the battery and the charging system.

Getting it checked

Warning lights can have many causes, and a fault code alone does not always tell the whole story. Engine diagnostics combine a scan with a physical inspection. If the warning is about your brakes, book a brake service without delay.
